Melvin Upton Jr. wasn't the sole trade target for the Blue Jays among the San Diego Padres this week, but it was the only deal they could get done.
"We talked a lot with San Diego, a lot of hypotheticals, a lot of potential deals," Toronto general manager Ross Atkins said. "They have interesting pitching as well. We talked a lot with many organizations."
One of the potential trade targets could have been Andrew Cashner, who started Tuesday against the Blue Jays. There had been some whispers that Cashner would not make the start because of a potential trade.
