Smoak’s grand slam powers Jays to shutout over Yankees

NEW YORK - There is a first time for everything and Justin Smoak couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment to make a little bit of history Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Over the course of their 39 years of existence, the Blue Jays had played 284 games in the Bronx, 224 of them at old Yankee Stadium and 60 at the new park. Never — no, not once — had a Blue Jay hit a grand slam home run on the road against the Yanks.

In the 285th game, with one swing of the bat against Yankee pitcher Ivan Nova in the top of the sixth inning Saturday, Smoak amended that oversight to break a scoreless tie and send the Jays on their way to a 6-0 victory over the Yankees.
