This is the first real off-season for the Mark Shapiro-Ross Atkins regime with the Blue Jays and their early grade would be close to failure.
Gone are Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, Brett Cecil, Michael Saunders, Joaquin Benoit.
Replaced by Kendrys Morales and Steve Pearce.
There is no starting left fielder or right fielder. Morales isn’t Encarnacion. Pearce is a major-league hitter, mostly set up for platoon play, who plays a lot of positions, none of them particularly well. There is no left-hander to speak of in the bullpen. And with Benoit gone, a dependable right-hander is in need of being replaced.
