SIMMONS SAYS: Gibbons in running for manager of year award

So who saw this coming: John Gibbons, manager of the year candidate in the American League.

Seriously.

It is easy to pick on Gibbons — and his critics regularly do — but he does enough of it himself in his own self-deprecating way. But what a challenging season this been for the Blue Jays, through roster shuffling, instability, injury, bullpen blowups, six-man rotations, innings counts, a culture change at the top of the organization and somehow Gibbons has been his old, mumbling, consistent, hands-off, today-is-another-day, let’s-not-complicate-the-world, manager.

It doesn’t get him noticed much. His sound bytes don’t often make the news.
