Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell has been diagnosed with early-stage cancer and will miss the rest of the season as he undergoes treatment.
Farrell, 53, made the announcement Friday, saying the Stage 1 lymphoma was discovered when he underwent hernia surgery earlier this week in Detroit.
"Thankfully, it was detected in the hernia surgery, so I can honestly tell you that I'm extremely fortunate that it was found," Farrell said.
He will begin a nine-week treatment plan Tuesday at Mass General Hospital in Boston, and Farrell said he expects to return to his job next season.
