When Melvin Upton Jr. stole three bases against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons couldn't help but think of the possibilities as the club bears down for the final seven weeks of the regular season.
The Jays don't steal bases regularly, with 38 through 115 games. That total put them at 25th in the majors before games were played on Thursday.
Upton Jr., who became the 16th Jay in team history to swipe three bases in a game, has 23 this season, which was good for eighth in the majors.
