AJAX, ONT. - There was a time when Chris Leroux was the best high school catcher in Ontario.
In Leroux’s sophomore year for the Winthrop University Eagles, he went to the mound, as catchers normally do, when coach Joe Hudak approached for a mound visit late in the game and said: “Take the gear off ... you’re in.”
Say what? Leroux had thrown a few bullpens but, suddenly, he was the closer.
On Thursday night, wearing Team Canada colours, Leroux worked six superb innings in an 11-6 win over Puerto Rico, allowing a homer and two singles and leaving with a 9-1 lead.
