In the fifth inning of Saturday’s Blue Jays-Mariners game, Seattle’s Ben Gamel smashed a Marcus Stroman offering deep to centre, a missile.
The Jays’ centre-fielder, Kevin Pillar, got a read on the hit and pedalled backwards to pull it in. But to the shock of 42,346 at the Rogers Centre, Pillar — the man Jays fans call Superman for his defensive play — was unable to put his glove on the ball and the double scored Jarrod Dyson from second, tying the game 1-1.
The majority of time, Pillar probably makes that catch — given that he is one of the best defensive outfielders in the game.
