There were raised eyebrows when Edwin Encarnacion was not in the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Monday night against the Philadelphia Phillies at the Rogers Centre.
And it wasn't just a day of rest for the Jays' designated hitter/first baseman.
Manager John Gibbons said Encarnacion jammed his right index finger while stealing his first base of the season, on Sunday against Baltimore during Toronto's 10-9 win.
When asked if the non-start would be a one-off for Encarnacion, Gibbons said he was "pretty sure" that would be the case.
It marked the first time in 2016 that Encarnacion did not start a game for Toronto.
