Fantasy Fare: Wins and saves don't always equate

A guy in our AL-only pool was mildly grousing the other day that he owns the closer on the league’s top-ranked team, but figures Ken Giles of the Astros should have more than 25 saves to show for Houston’s 78 victories. The problem he surmised was that the Astros have this infuriating habit of piling on runs and taking themselves out of save situations. Fact is, wins do not necessarily equate to saves and the most valuable closers this season are not the ones from the best teams, great starting pitching and a potent offence limiting their number of save opps.
