You’d be excused for looking at the top of the Padres batting order these days and wondering what’s going on. There, on most lineup cards recently, are Jose Pirela and Franchy Cordero batting a combined .362. Who? Pirela was a spare part in the Yankees infield until landing in San Diego last year as minor-league depth. Cordero was signed as a 17-year-old out of the Dominican back in 2011 but never regarded as anything more than a lukewarm prospect. However, both enjoyed unusually strong starts to their 2017 seasons in triple-A u2015 in terms of power, speed and AVG u2015 and because of injuries to Manuel Margot, Travis Jankowski and Alex Dickerson are now unexpectedly raking in The Show.
