Blue Jays infielder Marcus Semien has broken a pretty impressive record this evening, hitting his 44th home run of the season and setting the single-season record for home runs by a second baseman in Major League history.
The record was previously held by Davey Johnson at 43 home runs for quite some time – since1973 to be exact. Semien entered tonight’s game tied with Johnson before hitting a first-inning home run off of Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, a no-doubter to left field that put the Blue Jays ahead by two runs early.
Signed by the Blue Jays to a one-year, $18 million dollar contract this past off-season, Semien has been nothing short of amazing at second base this year for the club.
