Blue Jays manager John Gibbons has made it clear the defending American League East champions are working to be better defensively.
That’s part of the reason the club acquired Darwin Barney from the Los Angeles Dodgers when Troy Tulowitzki went down with a crack in his shoulder after a collision with centre fielder Kevin Pillar late last season.
“He’s a great fielder,” Gibbons said. “He was a big pickup for us at the end of the year last year.”
Barney, 30, is a 2012 Gold Glove and Fielding Bible Award winner with the Cubs.
“I think we’ve finally come to realize in the last couple of months of last year that we need a better defence if we’re going to do anything,” Gibbons said.
