TORONTO -- Darwin Barney is about to get some additional playing time as Blue Jays manager John Gibbons announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will be going with a platoon at second base.
Ryan Goins remains the regular starter, but Barney will begin to see additional playing time against left-handed pitching. Barney got the start Tuesday night against the Rangers with left-hander Martin Perez on the mound and that strategy is expected to continue in the future.
The reason behind the change in philosophy has been Goins' extended struggles at the plate.
