DUNEDIN — Sitting in his corner locker inside the Florida Auto Exchange Stadium clubhouse, Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin joked that if he gets assassinated or meets up with a strange accident, the media should look into it.
Martin had just finished railing against Major League Baseball’s plans to speed up the pace of the game and increase offence by doing things such as raising the bottom of the strike zone and eliminating intentional walks, which would cut down on dead time.
The theory is, raising the strike zone would lead to more balls in play as pitchers would have to elevate to get strikes.
