Yankees, With Strongest Home Run Muscles, Are Outdone by a Weakling

The Yankees lead the major leagues in home runs. With six players having at least 20 homers, and 218 over all, no other team is even close. The runners-up, the Los Angeles Dodgers, were more than 30 home runs behind.

And in that respect, the Detroit Tigers are the anti-Yankees; coming into this four-game series at Yankee Stadium, the entire team had homered 106 times, the fewest in the majors, and fewer than the combined total of Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, Miguel Andujar and Didi Gregorius.

But on a night in which the baseballs flew as if they had wings, the supposedly toothless Tigers beat the Yankees at their own game, hitting five home runs — two by 39-year-old Victor Martinez — in an 8-7 victory.
