Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell left during the second inning of Monday’s game against the Minnesota Twins after he was struck in the face with a line drive off the bat of the right-handed-hitting Eduardo Nunez, a former Yankee.
With runners on first and third and two outs, Mitchell was ahead in the count, 0-2, when he threw a 93-mile-per-hour cutter to Nunez. Mitchell’s cap fell off his head as he was struck, and he tumbled to the ground, clutching his face. As Mitchell knelt over, trainers immediately rushed to the mound. Television cameras zoomed in on Mitchell, and blood was visibly dripping from his head.
