WWE began the "New Era" with Payback 2016, but immediately it was apparent that once again the point of the show is to make Shane and Stephanie McMahon into big stars, because the whole show built to them getting co-ownership of RAW and restarting the main event multiple times to one-up each other. This left things feeling decidedly unsatisfying, although there were two show-stealing classics on the undercard and that more than justifies the $9.99 price tag for the WWE Network to watch this one. I enjoyed the show well enough, but as usual Roman Reigns comes out looking like a guest star on what's supposed to be "his" show.
