AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tied for the lead with only a few holes left in his first round on Thursday, Tiger Woods had the galleries at the Augusta National Golf Club in full throat early during the opening day of the 2019 Masters tournament. At that moment, it seemed like three-fourths of the spectators on the grounds were following Woods, especially after he made an improbable birdie from the thick trees left of the 14th hole to keep his name atop a leader board stocked with many of the world’s top-ranked golfers.
“Not a bad start,” Woods said later.
