When Badgers coach Bo Ryan unexpectedly retired in December, he handed the programs to his longtime lead assistant, Gard, to assure that his program would continue his vision. It put Wisconsin athletics director Barry Alvarez in a tough situation, but he eventually named Gard the permanent head coach March 7.
