There's a common phrase among basketball talent evaluators: You can't teach height.
Basically the mantra suggests that you can improve players' skills like dribbling, shooting and defense, but you can't make them grow. Thinking like this has led to the idealization of seven-footers -- the Holy Grail for many basketball scouts.
The coveting of tall players, particularly centers, has proven to be lucrative -- Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson and Shaquille O'Neal, just to name a few -- but it's also yielded results that aren't quite as positive, like Michael Olowokandi, Kwame Brown and Greg Oden.
