What causes athletes to choke? Sports psychologist weighs in

As a sports fan or athlete, you are familiar with the phenomenon known as "choking." No athlete wants to be labeled a choker or a "choke artist."

Some of the best athletes and teams have felt this unforgettable, horrifying experience, however. Jordan Spieth experienced it with his dramatic collapse at the Masters. Greg Norman's 1996 Masters collapse is mentioned in the same manner. The 2004 collapse by the Yankees in the American League Championship Series against the Red Sox is another example. The Yankees led three games to none, yet ended up losing the series four games to three in one of the worst team collapses in sports history.
