For some reason, the Cubs lefty has long struggled with a mental block when it comes to the seemingly simplistic task of trying to keep runners close at first base. We’ll get back to those in a moment, because first we should celebrate Lester’s creativity on Wednesday.
He went all Rick Barry on us. Again.
Lester snagged a sharp grounder from Francisco Cervelli in the second inning of the Cubs’ game against the Pirates on Wednesday afternoon, and when the ball got stuck in the webbing of Lester’s glove, the veteran did the smart thing.
