Serena Williams joined the U.S. Open's third-round winners on Saturday, a list that sister Venus hoped to make before the night was done.
It took three sets for Simona Halep to advance to the fourth round. But there will be more singles competition for American player Varvara Lepchenko.
Williams won her 307th match in Grand Slam competition, a record she had shared with Martina Navratilova, in her matinee at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She also tied Roger Federer for the most Slam wins all time. Federer is not playing because of injury.
Wearing pink sleeves and a white top and pink and white pleated skire, Williams overpowered Sweden's Johanna Larsson, 6-2, 6-1.
