Facing a decline in football participation, driven at least in part by concerns over concussions, the nation's largest maker of football helmets is close to a deal to distribute padded helmet coverings by 2017, the New York Post reported, citing unidentified sources.

Schutt, the helmet maker, would sign a licensing deal with Guardian Caps, makers of the padded coverings already used in practice by college programs such as Clemson, Oklahoma, Syracuse and Tennessee.
The padded coverings sell for $59.
