New Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman announced the dismissal of head coach Bill Cubit on Saturday, a week before the Illini were scheduled to start spring practice.
Cubit replaced Tim Beckman in 2015, who was fired a week before the season opener against Kent State. Cubit guided Illinois to a 5-7 record, but that wasn’t enough to keep his job under a new AD. That also leaves Illinois with limited options given the time constraints.
