Tom Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans, is capable of running the teams, according to a state court judge in Louisiana.
In January, Benson, 87, said that his third wife, Gayle, would take over the teams when he dies. Soon after, Benson’s daughter, Renee, and her two children sought to have him declared mentally unfit and for Renee to be put in charge.
Benson was examined by three physicians, and he and his family testified in court this month.
In his ruling, Judge Kern A. Reese of the Civil District Court in Orleans Parish said that “Benson had clarity of thought and volition, despite some memory lapses,” and that he “affirmed the actions he took in December and January, unequivocally.
