Dairon Asprilla scored a late second-half goal Sunday night, and the Portland Timbers beat New York City F.C., 1-0.
Asprilla scored his goal after a failed clearance by N.Y.C. fell at his feet at the top of the 18-yard box in the 79th minute. His shot deflected and found the empty side of the net.
Portland bounced back after losing to the other M.L.S. expansion team, Orlando City, a week ago. The loss extended N.Y.C.F.C.’s winless streak to five games.
N.Y.C.’s Khiry Shelton had close chances in the 88th and 89th minutes, but Portland goalkeeper Adam Larsen Kwarasey denied both shots.
