Taking off from the Upper West Side of Manhattan, thousands of athletes swam down the Hudson River, cycled along the Henry Hudson Parkway and ran through Central Park as part of the New York City Triathlon on Sunday.

The race, which had more than 4,000 entrants and a $30,000 prize purse, began about 6 a.m., with the competitors taking off in waves.

Ben Collins of Seattle won the men’s professional division, swimming one and a half kilometers, biking 40 kilometers and running 10 kilometers — the Olympic triathlon distances — in 1 hour 44 minutes 59 seconds.
