The Sports Authority at new low, files for bankruptcy

Sports Authority, the nation's largest retail sporting goods chain as recently as 10 years ago, filed for bankruptcy Wednesday and said it will close 140 stores, nearly a third of its total.

Like many of its brick-and-mortar counterparts in retail, it has seen increased competition — particularly in league- and NCAA-licensed goods — from online retailers such as Amazon and Fanatics, as well as retail sites run by leagues like the NFL and NBA.
