Texans' Derek Newton faces long road to recovery from torn tendons

Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien confirmed Tuesday that right tackle Derek Newton is out for the season.

Newton spent the night in a Denver hospital after tearing both patellar tendons in his knees during the first quarter of Monday's 27-9 loss to the Broncos.

Newton's knees buckled as he was back-pedaling in pass protection when Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller came on the rush on a third-and-8 at the Broncos' 25-yard line. Before Miller made contact with Newton, the sixth-year veteran from Arkansas State was already falling to the Mile High turf.

Newton had started 68 games, including 56 straight, for the Texans since being taken in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
