Swiss prosecutors launch 2006 World Cup investigation in FIFA case

Federal prosecutors in Switzerland tells the Associated Press that they are investigating an organizing committee of the 2006 World Cup in its continued probe of possible corruption linked to FIFA.

Franz Beckenbauer, a former FIFA executive committee member, has been under investigation by the FIFA ethics committee over alleged bribery and irregular payments of several million dollars linked to FIFA. Beckenbauer is one of six men being investigated by FIFA.

German magazine Der Spiegel reports that the investigation focuses on more than $10 million in payments over a three-year period. Beckenbauer has denied any wrongdoing.
