Mickey Callaway threw batting practice Sunday morning to the Staten Island Little League team. It made for a charming tableau: 12-year-olds just back from Williamsport, Pa., taking their hacks against the manager of the Mets at a sun-splashed big league ballpark. The Mets had visited the boys last Sunday at the Little League World Series.
“I think it brought some perspective to our guys,” Callaway said, “and I know we’ve been playing better since.”
So they had, with a win in Williamsport and then victories in four of six games at Citi Field, including two shutouts of the Washington Nationals.
