Piloting a rocket he dubbed "Evel Spirit," Braun accelerated to 430 mph in just 3.9 seconds, reaching a height of 2,000 feet above the canyon before his parachute deployed. Knievel's bid failed when his parachute opened early and he landed in the canyon.
Several members of Knievel's family were on hand, including Knievel's son, Robbie Knievel, and Evel Knievel's former wife, Krystal Kennedy-Knievel. Knievel died in 2007 at age 69.
After the jump, Braun thanked his team.
"I feel like the no-name third string quarterback of a junior varsity team that just won the Super Bowl," Braun said in a statement.
