The Red Wings and Avalanche were once part of the premier rivalry in the NHL, and one of the best in any sport in the late 1990s. It's only fitting that the first NHL outdoor game in Denver features these two teams, and there should be plenty of reminiscing about the days of Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg vs. Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov.
The alumni game should be great, but the actual game is going to have plenty of significance. The Red Wings are trying to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a 25th consecutive season, while the Avalanche are trying to get back to the postseason for a second time in three years.
