Stacey Augmon, one of the greatest defensive players in NCAA basketball history, won a national championship with UNLV in 1990. His jersey hangs in the rafters at the Thomas & Mack Center.
And after spending 20 years in the NBA as a player and coach, Augmon returned to his alma mater in 2011 to serve as an assistant coach.
With that resume, you'd think Augmon would be near the top of a short list to replace head coach Dave Rice, who was fired by UNLV Jan. 10 halfway through his fifth season in Las Vegas.
But Augmon recently told the Las Vegas Review-Journal he felt overlooked when the program named Todd Simon to finish the year as interim coach.
