Here’s a postseason lesson for opponents of the San Francisco Giants: When Conor Gillaspie shrugs and says that he has no particular idea why he is hitting a ball or where it is going, you are advised to duck.
Last Wednesday, this journeyman third baseman from Nebraska squared up to a 97-mile-per-hour sinker from Mets reliever Jeurys Familia and drove that pitch out of Citi Field. That hit knocked the Mets out of the playoffs. When reporters asked what pitch he hit, Gillaspie squinted and shrugged, sheepish.
“Right now I have no idea where it was,” he said last week.
