Fighting off windy and choppy conditions, Haley Anderson of the United States defended her title in the five-kilometer open-water race to claim the first medal of the FINA world swimming championships in Kazan, Russia. She surged to the lead in the closing meters, hitting the touch pad in 58 minutes 48.4 seconds. In the men’s race, Chad Ho of South Africa defeated Rob Muffels of Germany in a photo finish; the winning time was 55:17.6.
