Jeff King, a four-time champion, was the first musher to reach the community of Ruby, Alaska, in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Ruby is the first checkpoint along the 1,875-mile Yukon River. Mushers Brent Sass and Aliy Zirkle were en route to Ruby from the previous checkpoint in Cripple, Alaska, where several others appeared to be taking their mandatory 24-hour layover. Both Sass and Zirkle had taken that layover, but King had not. Thursday was the fifth day of the 1,000-mile race to Nome, Alaska.
