Sports Briefing | Cycling: Crashes Mar Richmond Race

Two crashes during team time-trial training for the world championships in Richmond, Va., injured several riders.

Five of the six riders for the Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies women’s team went down after hitting a manhole while passing another team stopped on the road. Annie Ewart broke her collarbone and was taken to a hospital, and Maura Kinsella sustained a concussion. Neither will race on Sunday.

The Team Sky riders Danny Pate, Luke Rowe and Elia Viviani also crashed. The extent of their injuries was not known. The team had already lost Chris Froome to injury for Sunday’s race.
