Steve Spurrier said he had decided to resign as South Carolina’s coach because the team was heading in the wrong direction. Spurrier said he started seriously thinking about resigning Sunday morning, spoke to Athletic Director Ray Tanner that afternoon and told his team Monday night that he was stepping down, effective immediately. Shawn Elliott is the interim head coach. South Carolina’s president, Harris Pastides, said he asked Spurrier to stay through the season, but Spurrier declined.
