Spieth on No. 18: 'Dumbest hole I've ever played'

FOX Sports is broadcasting the U.S. Open for the first time ever this year, and one of their new initiatives is to introduce more on-course microphones so viewers at home can hear conversations players have with their caddies.

Most of the conversations are pretty innocuous, but on Friday, while Spieth was playing the 18th hole, microphones overheard Spieth saying to his caddie: “This is the dumbest hole I’ve ever played in my life.”

At first there were some questions about where Spieth’s comments were directed, but it quickly became clear Spieth wasn’t referring to the actual layout of the hole — which the USGA changed from a par-5 on Thursday to a par-4 Friday — but rather to the way he played the hole (Spieth went from bunker to fescue en-route to a double bogey that knocked him out of the lead).
