EDISON, N.J. — Playing for the first time as the world’s No. 1 player, Jordan Spieth played like he didn’t belong in the top 100.
If he doesn’t do a 180, he won’t be No. 1 for long.
“I would argue that this was — after the tee shots — the worst round I've played in years,” Spieth said Thursday after shooting a 4-over-par 74 at Plainfield Country Club in the first round of The Barclays, the first of four tournaments in the FedExCup Playoffs.
At times impatient, unfocused, overly aggressive and a little rusty with his wedges, Spieth, who holds a huge lead in the FedExCup standings, looked nothing like the player who has won two majors and two other tournaments this year and overtook Rory McIlroy to become the world’s best with a runner-up finish in the PGA Championship.
