With his 108th rushing yard Saturday in the fourth quarter of the Las Vegas Bowl against Houston, San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey passed Wisconsin's Ron Dayne for most career rushing yards in NCAA history.
But there's a catch.
Dayne's mark of 6,397 yards was accumulated during regular-season games at Wisconsin from 1996-1999. Add on bowl games, and Dayne’s total yardage increases to 7,125, well above Pumphrey's mark.
However, stats from bowl games did not count towards career numbers until after an NCAA ruling in 2002. An according to the 2002 rule, Dayne can't add bowl-game yards to his career rushing total after the fact.
