Lochte was second at the halfway point behind Conor Dwyer, but the 11-time Olympic medalist fell off at the end of the race to finish fourth behind Townley Haas, Dwyer and Jack Conger with a time of 1 minute, 46.62 seconds. His top-six finish in the event secured a spot on the 800-meter freestyle relay team at Rio, an event in which Lochte has earned gold in three consecutive Games.
