Kansas City Royals pitcher Dillon Gee was hospitalized in Detroit following Sunday's game against the Tigers after the right-hander experienced shortness of breath, manager Ned Yost told reporters Tuesday.
Doctors found the 30-year-old was suffering from blood clots in his lung and shoulder and needed to be hospitalized overnight in Detroit while the Royals traveled to Kansas City. Yost said Gee is expected to return to Kansas City Tuesday, but will need further treatment and won't pitch again this season.
Blood clots are nothing new for Gee, who dealt with the issue in his pitching shoulder in 2012 as a member of the Mets, where he spent the first six seasons of his big-league career, going 40-37 with a 4.
