RIO DE JANEIRO — Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, regarded as one of the greatest marathoners in history, has won the the Rio Olympics men’s marathon in 2 hours 8 minutes 44 seconds. Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia took silver and Galen Rupp of the United States won bronze.
On an overcast morning, with intermittent rain, Kipchoge broke away from Lilesa and Rupp after about 20 miles.
Lilesa’s time was 2:09:54. Rupp finished in 2:10:55.
Stanley Biwott of Kenya, expected to contend for gold, pulled up at about Mile 22.
