The disappointing Rio Games continued for reigning 200-meter backstroke Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin as the current world-record holder in the event failed to advance to the finals Thursday night.
Franklin, who was seeded 11th after a preliminary swim of 2 minutes, 9.36 seconds, struggled with her turns and underwater dolphin kick in Thursday night's semifinal as her distance per stroke deteriorated the final 25 meters. The 21-year-old touched the wall with the third-slowest time of the semifinals (2:09.74), nearly five seconds slower than her record time of 2:04.06 at the 2012 London Games.
