Rio Olympics 2016: USA's Michelle Carter wins shot put gold, upsetting 2-time champion

Four years after a near-miss in London, Michelle Carter shocked the track and field world by winning Olympic gold in the shot put Friday night.

With an American record heave of 20.63 meters in her sixth and final attempt, Carter dethroned two-time defending Olympic champion and heavy favorite Valerie Adams of New Zealand. She is the first American woman to win gold in the shot put and only the second to medal, after Earlene Brown took bronze in the 1960 Rome Games.

Carter had been in second place behind Adams throughout after the Kiwi's 20.
