Rio Olympics 2016: The savagery of water polo, where pulling armpit hair is legal

RIO DE JANEIRO — It was a rocky start on Saturday for the U.S. men’s water polo team, which fell to Croatia, 7-5, a loss that puts their precarious medal hopes — they won a silver in 2008 — into jeopardy.

But at least everyone came out of the match in good shape. Water polo, you may have heard, probably is the most grueling sport in the Olympics, combining endurance swimming, ball skills and a whole lot of grappling that goes on under the water.
